EuroMOF2023 explores the frontiers of reticular and porous materials

by Virginia Greco

Co-organised by the ICN2, the Conference attracted about 700 participants, many of whom were young researchers making noteworthy contributions to this dynamic field of study.

The 5th edition of the European Conference on Metal Organic Frameworks and Porous Polymers (EuroMOF2023) took place in Granada (Spain) from 24 to 27 September, at the Palace of Congresses. Various internationally renowned speakers contributed lectures, alongside numerous younger researchers and PhD students. Different thematic sessions were held in parallel, covering all aspects of reticular materials, from theory and simulation to synthesis, characterization techniques, and a wide range of applications.

The event was co-organised by the ICN2, the University of Granada, the Institute of Molecular Science of the University of Valencia (ICMOL-UV), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the German Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (DECHEMA). At the forefront as conference chairs were ICREA Prof. Daniel Maspoch Comamala –leader of the ICN2 Supramolecular NanoChemistry and Materials Group (NanoUP)— and Prof. Jorge A. Rodríguez Navarro –Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Granada.

The impressive participation of PhD students was evident from the extension of the poster sessions and the programme of the Young Scientist Symposium, which took place on Sunday 24, before the official kick-off of the conference. The latter was meant for young researchers to present their work and boost their professional network. It was organised by Dr Natalia Muñoz Padial, Junior Leader-Retaining Fellow La Caixa at ICMOL (University of Valencia), and Dr. Arnau Carné Sánchez, Ramón y Cajal Researcher at the ICN2 in the NanoUP group.

Several companies, whose products and activities are related with the characterization, industrialization and commercialization of Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and porous materials and their applications, took part in an exhibition held in the hall of the Palace of Congresses. As a co-organiser and sponsor of the event, the ICN2 also featured a stand, serving as a meeting point for researchers interested in learning more about nanoscience and Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) research conducted at our institute, as well as for prospective new collaborators or PhD students looking for the next step in their career. The stand and the informative material were provided by the Marketing and Communication Department of the ICN2, with Dr Virginia Greco attending the event.

With approximately 700 participants from all over Europe and beyond, EuroMOF2023 was undeniably a successful and carefully organized event. The bustling conference rooms and the lively ambience demonstrated the high interest in MOFs and porous materials, as well as how active and vibrant is the research community working on these topics. The next appointment at European level will be EuroMOF2025, which will be held in Crete (Greece). However, MOF enthusiasts can already meet next year in Singapore at the MOF2024 Conference.
