Dr Ting Zhang and Dr Xu Han receive the Best Doctoral Thesis Award 2021-2022 in Materials Science from the Spanish Microscopy Society

by Virginia Greco

Both researchers conducted their doctoral studies at the ICN2 under the supervision of ICREA Prof. Jordi Arbiol.

Dr Ting Zhang and Dr Xu Han, former researchers at the ICN2 in the Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group, led by ICREA Prof. Jordi Arbiol Cobos, were conferred (ex-equo) the Award for the Best 2021-2022 Doctoral Thesis in Material Sciences from the Spanish Microscopy Society (SME) at the MFS2023 Conference, held in Braga (Portugal), from 27 to 29 September 2023.

The Spanish Microscopy Society serves as a multidisciplinary meeting point for many researchers and professionals in Spain who use microscopy or related techniques in their work. It was one of the organisers of the 2023 Conference on Microscopy at the Frontiers of Science (MFS2023), an international event focused on electron microscopy and its impact on life sciences, material sciences and structural biology.

Dr Ting Zhang received her PhD in September 2021 defending a thesis on ‘Zn-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived Materials for High-Efficient Carbon Dioxide Electrochemical Reduction’, a work that she developed under the supervision of Prof. Jordi Arbiol and Prof. Joan Ramón Morante. Dr Xu Han obtained his PhD in September 2022, presenting his study on ‘Rational Design of the Catalysts Microenvironment to Effectively Boost the Carbon Dioxide Electrochemical Reduction’, which he carried out under the supervision of Prof. Arbiol.

These awards are conferred by SME to distinguish doctoral research studies (in the areas of Life Sciences, Materials Science, and Technological Developments), in which microscopy techniques represent a significant contribution. Congratulations to the awardees!
