by Chema Arcos

The ICN2 Group Leader has been awarded in the Preclinical Research category for her outstanding contributions to disease diagnosis based on nanobiosensors.

This week, the results of the 2025 Fundación Lilly Biomedical Research Awards, now in their 23rd edition, were announced. These awards recognise the work of researchers who have made significant contributions to the advancement of biomedicine and health sciences in Spain. With it, the Foundation aims to promote high-quality science that advances knowledge and benefits society.

In the Preclinical Research category, the prize was awarded to Prof. Laura M. Lechuga, leader of the ICN2 Nanobiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group and Full Professor at CSIC and CIBER-BBN, for her outstanding contributions in the field of diagnostics through nanomedicine.

Prof. Laura M. Lechuga's research focuses on developing nanobiosensor devices for clinical diagnostics, where she is recognised as a world leader. These devices have been applied to the early detection of biomarkers for diseases such as cancer and infectious diseases, providing rapid, minimally invasive and highly accurate diagnostics. The jury highlighted how her work "combine basic scientific research, innovative devices and technology transfer with a clear vision of their societal impact".

In the clinical research category, the award went to Dr Manuel Fernández-Real, a clinician and researcher in endocrinology and nutrition at the Biomedical Research Institute of Girona (IDIBGI) and the CIBEROBN.

At ICN2, we are pleased to celebrate yet another recognition of the outstanding work of Prof. Laura M. Lechuga.
