The Catalan Society of Chemistry Recognises Prof. Daniel Maspoch’s Research Career

by Chema Arcos

At the 2025 awards ceremony, the ICN2 Group Leader received the Scientific Excellence prize for his outstanding achievements in chemistry.

The 2025 awards ceremony of the Societat Catalana de Química (Catalan Society of Chemistry) took place in Barcelona on 26 June. Among the winners was ICREA Prof. Daniel Maspoch, leader of the ICN2 Supramolecular Nanochemistry and Materials Group, who was honoured with the Scientific Excellence award.

These distinctions, established in 2021, recognise careers at all stages, from experienced experts to young talent, in the field of chemistry. The categories cover not only research, but also areas such as science dissemination and education.

One of the main lines of research of Prof. Maspoch’s group is the development of Clip-off Chemistry, an innovative strategy based on the controlled breakdown of complex structures to precisely produce materials and molecules. The project received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) in 2021.

Their research also covers the development of new porous chemical structures, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). These materials have many applications in diverse fields, including biomedicine and catalysis.

This award adds to the recent honours received by Prof. Maspoch, including the Hermanos Elhuyar Award from the German Chemical Society and the Jaume I Award for New Technologies in 2023. At ICN2, we would like to congratulate him on this well-deserved achievement.
