The FOTOCIENCIA 17 exhibition in tour throughout Spain

by Virginia Greco

The winning photos of the 17th edition of the annual scientific photography contest FOTCIENCIA are now collected in an exhibition, which can be currently visited in Madrid and Pamplona and, in the future, will be available in other cultural, educational and research centres of the country.

FOTCIENCIA is an annual initiative organised by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), with the support of the Jesús Serra Foundation, which aims to bring science closer to society through photography and microphotography. This year’s edition is now open to the public and can be visited in two places: the CSIC Scientific Library in Madrid and the Science Museum of the University of Navarra in Pamplona.

The exhibition brings together 49 photographs, selected out of 448 participating, focusing on very different scientific themes. Each image is accompanied by a text in which the authors explain the photo and their scientific interests. One of the winning photos of FOTCIENCIA17 was taken by Marcos Rosado, Specialist Technician of the ICN2 Electron Microscopy Unit: his Silicon nanoplankton is one of the two images chosen in the “micro” category of the contest.

FOTCIENCIA 17 has joined the UN campaign to reach the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, included in its Agenda 2030. For this reason, all the photos are associated with the symbol of one of these goals, chosen by the authors themselves. As a novelty, and with the aim of improving the accessibility to the contents, this year an audio description will be available and downloadable. The full catalogue can also be downloaded.

The exhibition can be visited until November 19 in Pamplona (Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm and Saturdays from 8am to 1.30pm) and until November 30 in Madrid (Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 2.30pm). Then, FOTCIENCIA 17 will be lent free of charge to entities that request it and it is expected to be touring in museums and cultural, educational and research centres throughout Spain, starting from the Ramón J. Sender Foundation in Barbastro, Huesca. All the information on FOTCIENCIA17 and forthcoming events are available on the website of the initiative.
