Organized within the framework of the VI Festival of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology "10alamenos9" (10totheminus9), the Catalan Nanostories Contest has now official winners, who will be able to participate in the national final round, competing with students from all over the country. Almost 100 young students took part in the contest writing some amazing and creative stories... that take place at the nanoscale.
The Nanostory Contest (Concurso de Nanorelatos) is a nano-literature competition that aims to encourage interest in the nanoscale world, known as "nanoworld" whitin the educational community. This contest motivated almost 100 secondary and high school students from all over Catalonia to write short stories about nanoscience and nanotechnology, unlocking their creativity. The winners were officially announced and awarded on Friday April 30, at 6.30pm, in a telematical event held from Vil·la Urània in Barcelona. The winners will now run for the final prize participating in the national Nanostories Contest.
Included in the framework of the VI Festival of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology "10alamenos9", the nano-story competition in Catalonia has been organized, with the help of the ICN2, by many institutes and cultural centres such as the University of Barcelona (the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (IN2UB) and the Scientific and Technological Centers (CCiTUB)), the Research Institute of Energy of Catalonia (IREC), the Catalan Society of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (SCN2), the Barcelona Institute of Materials Science (ICMAB-CSIC), El Nanoescopista, Official College of Chemists of Catalonia, Espai Jove Casa Sagnier and Vil·la Urania.
With the slogan "A lot of stories fits in the nanoworld, can you share them?", the contest attracted the attention of students from almost 40 different schools of Catalonia and the Valencian Community. After two rounds of evaluation, according to the criteria established in the rules, the Jury decided to award the following prizes:
Secondary school category:
- Winner, Lorena Morar (3r ESO, Institut de Navarcles), with the nanostory "Sujeto 122".
Atado en una silla de madera vieja, unas luces deslumbraron la sala donde me encontraba. Fijé mi mirada en dos botones posicionados delante de mí, uno negro y otro blanco. Mi cuerpo se tensó al oir una voz robótica obligándome a pulsar uno de ellos. El negro tenía escrito la palabra "macro" y el blanco "nano". No entendía nada. No sabía cuál elegir, ¿qué me iba a pasar? Con pavor extendí mi brazo y sin pensar pulsé el blanco. Ya no había vuelta atrás.
Mi cuerpo se desató de la silla y levitó permaneciendo en el centro de la habitación. Los ojos se me pusieron completamente en blanco. Miles de escenas transcurrían dentro de mí a una velocidad incontrolable. Átomos y moléculas a perfecto escala aparecían sin fin. En un momento dado mi cuerpo cayó al suelo. Tres personas con batas pulcras me cogieron y me sacaron de allí. Realizaron una incisión en la parte abajo de la nuca, arrancándome un nano-chip. Robaron mis visiones para luego tirarme a un gigante vacío. Uno de ellos, mientras apuntaba en su libreta, dijo:
"Ángel García Cortés, sujeto número 122. Resultados con notable éxito, desafortunadamente, falleciendo en el acto" .

Highschool category:
- Winner: Michelle Salazar (1r BTX, Ins Lluís Companys), with the nanostory "El nanoejercito de la humanidad"
Hace unas pocas décadas, la humanidad consiguió un poderoso aliado. Uno que debe perdurar, pues ya no nos imaginamos una vida sin él. Su creación fue un experimento incompleto más. Intentando rellenar sus datos, desarrolló consciencia propia. Cuando se inoculó en humanos, comenzó a multiplicarse indefinidamente. Además, también podía desplazarse mediante redes informáticas, medio por el que intentó comunicarse con nosotros. La humanidad, temerosa, trató de eliminarlo en vano, pues no tenían nada que hacer contra él. La creación, bautizada como nanoejército, una vez aceptada, mostró su gratitud a la humanidad. Acabó con cualquier tipo de enfermedad, y en caso de no eliminarla, la reducía lo suficiente para dejarlo en nuestras manos. Ahora, no hay humano sin nanoejército. Curiosamente, a pesar de los billones que hay, todos son uno. El nanoejército nos enseñó el valor de todos para uno y uno para todos. La única diferencia es que en el nanoejército solo existe una consciencia que actúa sobre millones de cuerpos. Nosotros, sin embargo, somos millones de consciencias que deben aprender a actuar como un solo cuerpo.

All of the above will receive nano-related prizes, such as a "Nano is the new Rock’n Roll" T-Shirt and a visit to the ICN2 and ICMAB’s facilities.
