They developed their thesis project under the supervision of group leader Prof. José Garrido (ICN2) and Dr Anton Guimerà (IMB-CNM-CSIC).

Dr Ramon García Cortadella, Dr Eduard Masvidal Codina and Dr Nathan Schaefer have been each awaarded a UAB Extraordinary Doctorate Prize in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering 2020-2021. While enrolled in the PhD programme of the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB), they carried out research on neural interfaces under the supervision of ICREA Prof. José Garrido, leader of the ICN2 Advanced Electronic Materials and Devices Group, and Dr Anton Guimerà, researcher at the IMB-CNM-CSIC.

Dr Nathan Schaefer defended his thesis on “High-density cortical implant for brain-machine interfaces based on two-dimensional materials” in April 2021. In July 2021, Dr Ramon García Cortadella defended his thesis titled ‘Graphene microtransistors: a wide-bandwidth technology for recording brain field potentials’, and Dr Eduard Masvidal Codina his thesis on ‘High-Bandwidth Graphene Neural Interfaces’.

The UAB Extraordinary Doctorate Prizes are awarded to graduate students across all the areas of the Doctoral Programme among all the theses defended in an academic year (one prize for every five theses), without the doctor being required to apply for it. Awardees are entitled to a refund of the fee they paid to apply for the degree and to a certificate.
