Novel glucose biosensor based on bimetallic nanowires, CHEM. COMM. (2011)

by Super User

A new detection system for clinical analysis and biotechnological applications.

A novel nanowire based biosensor for glucose detection was recently described in Chemical Communications by researchers led by ICREA and UAB Prof. Arben Merkoci, Group Leader of the Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group at the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology (ICN), in collaboration with researchers from UNT and CONICET in Argentina.

The biosensor is based on a bimetallic nanowire that ‘mimics’ enzymes with the added advantage of being able to work even under extreme conditions. The sensor uses a very low electrical potential, thereby minimising interference and presenting high repeatability and sensitivity. Combining the bimetallic nanowires with a screen-printed transducing platform offers significant advantages in terms of mass production, robustness and stability of the whole biosensing system, making the technology of significant interest for low-cost point-of-care clinical analysis and other biotechnological applications.
