Doctoral student Marisol Espinoza, of ICN's Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group, won the Best Poster prize at the 17th Transfrontier Meeting of Sensors and Biosensors, held on 20 and 21 September, 2012 in Tarragona, Spain.
The Transfrontier Meeting of Sensors and Biosensors, which began in 1996, is an annual event that draws researchers from Catalonia and the French regions of Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées. This year's edition featured three plenary sessions (Implantable biosensors; Innovation, entrepreneurship and chemical sensors; and Electrochemical Biosensors: from principles to applications) plus a poster session for young researchers.
Ms Espinoza won for her poster, entitled "Gold nanoparticles as carriers of a caseinglycopeptide for therapeutic and biosensing applications". The poster describes recently published work by her and her colleagues (see Merkoci et al., Biosensors and Bioelectronics, in press), in which they synthesised gold nanoparticles functionalised with k-casein derived peptides, characterised them, and then evaluated their efficacy as bacterial adhesion inhibitors. Based on their results, the team proposed a design for a potential biosensor for bacterial pathogens that exploits the dual functionality of the nanoparticles: as carriers of the biorecognition molecule and as electrocatalytic labels.
