Biosensors 2023 Conference in Korea explores cutting-edge technologies in biotechnology

by Virginia Greco

This edition of the largest and most well-established event in the biosensor industry was co-chaired by Prof. Arben Merkoçi. Additionally, numerous members from his group, including doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers, made valuable contributions through oral presentations and poster sessions.

Biosensors 2023, the 33rd Anniversary World Congress on Biosensors Conference, was held from the 5th to the 8th June 2023 in Busan, South Korea. It brought together the biosensor community for a four-day event filled with insightful discussions, innovative research presentations, and engaging poster sessions. The conference, organized and sponsored by Elsevier/Biosensors & Bioelectronics, showcased the latest advancements in biosensor technologies and their applications in various fields.

This conference, which is the largest and most well-established event in the biosensor industry, attracted a diverse audience of around a thousand attendees from industry, academia, and government organizations. The programme of this edition included lectures from an exceptional lineup of plenary speakers, as well as contributed oral talks, and extensive poster sessions.

The conference took place in Korea, a country at the forefront of driving cutting-edge developments in biochips, wearable sensors, and telecommunication interfaces. Throughout the conference, a wide range of topics were covered to highlight the multidisciplinary nature of biosensors and their applications. Some of the main topics discussed during the conference were: bioelectronics, commercial biosensors, nucleic-acid- and enzyme-based biosensors, immunosensors, lab-on-a-chip and multiplexed sensors, smartphone diagnostics and wearable biosensors, nanobiosensors and nanoanalytical systems, synthetic biology for biosensors, proteomics, cancer-cell detection, single molecule analysis, CRISPR-based biosensors, theranostics and implantable sensors.

ICREA Prof. Arben Merkoçi, leader of the ICN2 Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group, served as the co-chair of the conference, contributing to its organization. Various members of his team participated in the event: Vernalyn Abarintos Rentino, Enric Calucho Palma, Gabriel Maroli, José Alfonso Marrugo Ramírez and Dr Marianna Rossetti gave oral talks, while Dr Ruslan Álvarez Diduk, Dr Andrew Piper, Dr Giulio Rosati and Massimo Urban presented posters.

Biosensors 2023 provided a unique platform for researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers to connect, collaborate, and gain valuable insights into the latest developments in biosensor technologies. As the biosensor field continues to advance, this conference played a pivotal role in driving innovation and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, ultimately contributing to the improvement of health, well-being, and the environment.
