The thermal dissipation in new ultra-thin materials is extremely relevant for heat management of future electronic devices. A combination of characterization techniques allows studying how this and other properties vary as a consequence of increased thickness and change of crystallinity of the material.

Experts in various branches of nanomedicine discuss recent developments and provide their vision about the future of the field in a Roadmap article published in the 'Journal of Physics, Materials'. Researchers from the ICN2 Nanostructured Functional Materials Group and the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona contributed a section dedicated to the use of nanoparticles as carriers for drug delivery in Parkinson’s disease treatments.

Cooling Photonics has raised 630,000 euros of investment that will accelerate the entry into the market of its cooling technology, aimed at the energy, electrical charging, and aerospace sectors. The company has received support from ACCIÓ through the Startup Capital line, aimed at boosting the growth of emerging companies with high technological potential.

The R+D+I Energy for Society Network (XRE4S) provides consultancy and mentoring in industrial strategy, property protection, and market positioning to researchers who are interested in transferring their technologies to an existing company or founding a new one. Five spin-offs have been recently created with the support of XRE4S and one more (from the ICN2) may be established soon.

Majorana anyons, theoretically predicted particles which are expected to show exotic properties with great potential for quantum computing applications, are both very elusive and difficult to distinguish from other quantum states. Researchers from ISTA, ICN2 and ICMM-CSIC combined two different measurement techniques to unmask an impostor Majorana particle, as described in a study published in ‘Nature’.

A team of researchers led by members of the ICN2 NanoBiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group presents on the pages of ‘Sensors & Diagnostics’ an innovative photonic biosensor that can detect the presence of the SARS-COV-2 virus at very low concentrations in a sample. It can also provide a quantitative measure of the viral load in less than 20 minutes, which is crucial to prevent the spread of the infection and to intervene quickly with the appropriate treatment.

A paper recently published in 'Light: Science & Applications’ demonstrates that quantum materials of the topological insulator family can efficiently upconvert electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz (THz) regime. These results open new avenues for THz photonics technology and its application in sensing, homeland security and sixth-generation mobile communications. The study was conducted by a team of researchers coordinated by ICN2 group leader Dr Klaas-Jan Tielrooij.

In a paper published in ‘JACS’, an alternative method to synthesize complex metal-organic framework (MOFs), by assembling prefabricated “pores”, is proposed.
