As part of a national research collaboration, Spanish researchers including the ICN2 have made uniformly nanoporous graphene a practicable reality. A major milestone in graphene research, this brings us one step closer to unlocking this wonder material’s full potential not only in electronics, but also in filtration and sensing applications. Presented this morning to journalists at a press conference at the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology, the work is published in Science.

The creation of the Severo Ochoa Centres and Maria de Maeztu Units Alliance (SOMMa) will allow research centres and units to increase their impact, foster their cooperation and work as a network, and enrich the R+D system as a whole. SOMMa has presented the document “SOMMa Position Paper: Actions required to safeguarding science competitiveness”, which aims at drawing the attention of politicians to tackle some of the current administrative issues urgently and in a long-lasting manner.

Kicking off the month of March we had the second "Coffee with Pablo" to discuss the ICN2's strategic move towards the greater professionalisation of its technology transfer activities and some of the related ethical issues. With the active participation of employees from all operational areas, the session consolidated this format as a useful forum for internal communication.

ICN2 researchers have developed a novel concept in transistor technology: a two-in-one power source plus transistor device that runs on solar energy. Published in Advanced Functional Materials and currently trending in the Wiley-VCH “Hot Topics” list, lead author Amador Pérez-Tomás is calling it the “solaristor”.

The ICN2 returned this year to the Graphene Pavilion at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, this time showcasing graphene-based brain implants designed to restore speech and communication abilities. It also explored super hydrophobic materials in the classroom context at the parallel Youth Mobile Festival.

Researchers of the ICN2 Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group led by Prof. Arben Merkoçi have devised a simple manufacturing method for versatile graphene oxide-based micromotors. Requiring no specialist equipment, it can be used to produce a range of micromotors that can be further tuned for different purposes.
