Severo Ochoa Programme 2018-2022 Pillar 2: Enabling Platforms - Nanocharacterisation
The ICN2 has leading scientific expertise and strong technical competence in research areas such as imaging, spectroscopy and manipulation at the nanoscale, which require advanced characterisation techniques. In-house equipment and multiple national and international large scale facilities are used to perform these measurements.
Highlights
New aberration-corrected Transmission Electron Microscope
A consortium of institutions (including ICN2, CSIC, BIST, UAB, and ALBA Synchrotron) has been created and funding has been secured through various sources (25% of which via the current Severo Ochoa Programme) to acquire a new state-of-the-art aberration-corrected Transmission Electron Microscope, to be installed at the nearby ALBA Synchrotron, and a Focused Ion Beam. A part of the funds was granted by Microsoft. The new equipment is expected to be installed before the end of 2021.

Raman microscope
It will be acquired in the next few months, as part of the instrumentation needed by the new Ultrafast Dynamics in Nanoscale Systems group.

To keep pace with the needs of the research groups, the ICN2 will continue to develop state-of-the-art characterisation tools and techniques in-house.
The research priorities identified for the 2018-2022 period are focused on advancing a range of technologies for nanocharacterisation at ultra-high resolution, including the exploration of new scopes, for correlative microscopy, and for dimensional nanometrology, with a view to standardising the way in which materials/systems are processed and characterised at the nanoscale.
The specific actions planned include: contributing to the acquisition of a new state-of-the-art aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope to be installed at the nearby ALBA Synchrotron; developing collaborative projects with ALBA; compiling an inventory of standardised protocols and methodologies for the analysis and characterisation of nanomaterials.
