Severo Ochoa Programme 2018-2022 Pillar 3: Technology pipeline
In this second Severo Ochoa Programme, knowledge and technology transfer is established as a third pillar of the institute’s scientific programme. The Technology Pipeline reflects the ICN2’s renewed commitment to the socioeconomic relevance and impact of its research outcomes. The aim is to consolidate its current track record in transfer, industrial collaborations and spinoff creation, already given a strong boost under the previous Severo Ochoa grant.
A particular goal is to align the institute with the strong regional pharma/biotech and clinical ecosystem, though efforts to advance technology readiness levels are present throughout the programme.
Highlights
New Business and Innovation Unit
The former Intellectual Property and Business Development offices were consolidated under a newly created unit of Business and Innovation (B&I). A new Head for this Unit was appointed in 2019.
A spin-off for the development of brain-implants based on graphene technology was created
INBRAIN Neuroelectronics, a spin-off of the ICN2 and ICREA, was established in 2019 with the mission to develop brain-implants based on graphene technology for application in patients with epilepsy, Parkinson’s and other neuronal diseases.
A spin-off for to develop therapies for autoimmune diseases was created
Ahead Therapeutics SL was created to advance the development of therapies for autoimmune diseases and pursue their application in a clinical setting.
Collaboration with Microsoft Quantum Labs in Delft and Copenhagen
This important collaboration will allow developing scalable hybrid nanowire-base circuits for quantum computing applications; connected to this collaboration is the generous donation by Microsoft of several hundreds of k€ to contribute to the purchase of a new aberration-corrected Transmission Electron Microscope.
Further actions contributing to this pipeline can be found in the Cross-Cutting Area: Exploitation of research outcomes, in particular those designed to support, professionalise and stimulate involvement in the innovation chain. Activities here are led by the ICN2 Business and Innovation Office.
